Laveen Neighborhoods:

Laveen is a suburban community conveniently located eight miles southwest of Downtown Phoenix near the confluence of the Gila and Salt rivers. Parts of Laveen constitute an unincorporated area in Maricopa County, while the remainder falls within the city limits of Phoenix, constituting the city’s “Laveen Village”. Although Laveen has been home to “pastoral alfalfa, cotton, and dairy farms” since the 1880s, housing and commercial developments have been increasingly urbanizing the area over the past two decades.

Laveen has a rich history was named after the first postmaster, Walter E. Laveen, around 1918. The first school was built in 1913 on land donated by the Laveen family. Before 1911, when Roosevelt Dam was built to contain the Salt River, the community was isolated by the running water of the Salt River.

In 2000, a commercial home builder developed “Arlington Estates”, a large residential community, transforming rural Laveen into the city we now know today. Since that time, the community has experienced explosive residential growth. That growth has been slowed by community activist groups, such as the LCC and two newer groups. These groups influence developers to include equestrian trails, open spaces, and rural elements in new developments to maintain the small town culture and feel Laveen has been known for. For example, when Wal-Mart opened its Laveen location in 2007 it looked “a little different than most other Wal-Marts. The face of the building has more of a rural design and there is more dense and mature landscaping than other WalMart stores.” Keeping the natural beauty of the land is one of the key factors, which makes Laveen so special.

Laveen is home to two golf courses: the Bougainvillea Golf Club (private) and the Aguila Golf Course (public), both with spectacular views and a must see for golf enthusiasts.

Laveen residents have a long history of taking care of themselves and volunteering to help neighbors. We hope new residents of Laveen will enjoy the spirit of our community and take advantage of the many opportunities to get involved and meet their neighbors!
